Grendel, from 'Beowulf'

This is an illustration from Beowulf, a 10th century English poem.

'This gruesome creature was called Grendel, 
notorious prowler of the borderland, ranger of the moors,
the fen and the fastness; this cursed creature'...

'Then under cover of night, Grendel came
to Hrothgar's lofty hall' ...
