The Crocodile and Fishes, an illustration by JVL in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,
Artists' Choice Editions, 2009
This is a wonderful example of metaphorical hypocrisy in one of Lewis Carroll's poems.
How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
Wth gently smiling jaws.
